March is Endometriosis awareness month and Bindi Irwin recently spoke of her struggle with diagnosis and Endometriosis. Nothing puts the spotlight on a health topic, like a celebrity. However, the truth is celebrity or not Endometriosis is a painful condition which affects 1 in 9 women or young girls, who are suffering in silence from chronic pain related to Endometriosis.

Endometriosis, occurs when the lining of the uterus the Endometrium, grows outside of the Uterus, which is abnormal and causes pelvic pain and sometimes infertility.

It can take many years to get a formal diagnosis, and that diagnosis is usually more than likely made after surgical intervention called a laparoscopy. .

1. There is no cure, but some things have been known to help a little for some.

2. Teenagers are not too young to have Endometriosis.

3. Endometriosis can’t be prevented.

4. A hysterectomy is not a cure for Endometriosis.

5. Endometriosis does not always cause infertility, but it does for some.

6. Period pain is not normal.

7. Endometriosis can only be diagnosed through surgical intervention.

8. Pregnancy is not a cure for Endometriosis.

9. Pain levels are not related to the extent of the disease.

10. Endometriosis is not an STI and you can not catch it.

Medications prescribed by treating physician.

Surgical interventions.

Allied treatments, physiotherapy, psychology-helping to cope with the pain and symptoms arising from Endometriosis, and massage. Sometimes it takes several treatments together that helps but like many elements of chronic pain, it takes trialing different modalities to find each person’s best outcome.
